Overview
The CDC and the World Health Organization have reported a respiratory illness of unknown cause called Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). Symptoms are flu-like such as fever, muscle aches, headache, sore throat, cough, shortness of breath and difficulty breathing. Some deaths have been reported with this illness. Cases have been reported in China, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, and other countries. It appears that some healthcare workers that have had close contact with patients having this illness have also become infected.
The CDC has issued various health advisories on this illness.Advisories include infection control measures for patient care in hospitals including, but not limited to, “Airborne precautions (including an isolation room with negative pressure relative to the surrounding area and use of an N-95 respirator for persons entering the room).”
